A senior Hezbollah official Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hamadi was shot dead by unidentified assailants in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley region.

The incident took place on Tuesday night outside his residence in Machghara in western Bekaa district. Hamadi was shot at six times in the drive-by shooting by the gunmen in what the Lebanese media called an apparent assassination, the Times Of Israel reported.

As per the report, the assailants were driving two separate cars and fled the scene soon after the attack. The Hezbollah leader was rushed to a nearby hospital in the area, but died shortly later.

Local media reports stated that Lebanese authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, suspecting years-long family feud. Political angle has been ruled out by the authorities.

Hamadi was also in FBI’s most wanted list for hijacking a plane with 153 passengers and crew on board. The plane was enroute to Rome from Athens.

The incident comes as the ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon is underway. Hezbollah had joined Hamas in its war against Israel in 2023. Israel had infiltarted Hezbollah’s supply chain last year, causing numerous pagers and walkie-talkies to explode in a series of blasts across Lebanon in September.

Nearly two months later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had taken responsibility for the mass pager explosions, which had claimed at least 26 lives and left thousands injured.

Meanwhile, under the ceasefire agreement, Israel has agreed to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon by January 26. Hezbollah will also be retreating north of the Litani river from the border with Israel.

More than 1.2 million Lebanese and 50,000 Israelis have been displaced in the conflict. According to Lebanese officials, over 130 of its citizens were killed in Israel. Hezbollah reportedly began conducting near-daily attacks in Israel since October 8, a day after Hamas stormed southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage, and triggering a war in Gaza.
