PM Modi Meets Yunus Amid Row Over Northeast ‘Landlocked’ Remark

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in bilateral relations between New Delhi and Dhaka following Hasina’s ouster on August 5 last year and the Nobel laureate taking charge of the interim government.

The tenions increased after instances of violence targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh surfaced after the Awami League-led government was overthrown, and India granted asylum to Hasina.

The recent escalation in tensions between India and Bangladesh came after Yunu’s “landlocked” comment on India’s northeastern states during his four-day China visit.

Yunus had called Bangladesh the “only guardian of the ocean” during the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) annual conference, calling it a massive opportunity.

”The seven states of India, the eastern part of India, are called the seven sisters. They are a landlocked region of India. They have no way to reach out to the ocean,” Yunus said.
