With Bid To Rescue 170 Monks & More, India Gets Deep Into Myanmar Quake-Relief Efforts With Op Brahma

<p>Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing in Myanmar, which was struck by an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude on Friday. According to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is conducting a rescue operation at the U hla thein monastery, where 170 monks are still stuck under the emergency mission ‘Operation Brahma’, on Monday.</p>
<p>The NDRF team are deployed at the Sky Villa, where 4 towers of 11 storeys each have collapsed and several foreigners are stuck.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Indian army will visit the hospital site and set up their Medical Services on Tuesday. According to MEA, relief materials are arriving on Tuesday, and they will also be given to the Secretary General of the state Mahanayak Committee (2nd highest of the Committee in Myanmar) where around 2,000 monks are sitting outside the monastery, who are not injured but have nowhere to go and have no basic amenities.</p>
<p>Teams will also be deployed to the Mandalay Palace, Maha Muni Pagoda, MIIT, and other such places where substantial damage has occurred. The teams are assisting members of the Indian community with their stay and food, as per MEA.</p>

<p>On Saturday, India delivered 15 tonnes of relief material and dispatched more supplies by air and sea, along with rescue teams. The supplies included tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets and essential medicines.</p>
<p>The death toll from the devastating Myanmar earthquake has risen to 1,700, with 3,400 others injured and more than 300 still missing.</p>
<p>Aside from India, China and Thailand are among Myanmar’s neighbours that have sent relief materials and teams, along with aid and personnel from Malaysia, Singapore and Russia.</p>
<p>The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said that the destruction has been extensive and humanitarian aid should be &ldquo;growing by the hour&rdquo;.</p>
<p>The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 6.7-magnitude tremor.&nbsp;</p>
