China on Monday reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on the India-China ties favouring dialogue over discord, saying that the mainstream of China-India interactions has been friendly exchanges and mutual learning.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, during a media briefing, appreciated PM Modi’s positive remarks on the bilateral relations and said that the meeting between President Xi Jinping and PM Modi in Kazan provided strategic guidance for the improvement and development of the bilateral ties.

During a podcast with Lex Fridman, PM Modi said that cooperation between India and China is essential for global peace and prosperity and normalcy has returned to the India-China border.

Speaking on the bilateral ties, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that a cooperative dance between the elephant and dragon contributing to mutual success is the only choice for both sides.

”China appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ s recent positive statements on China-India relations. The successful meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan last October provided strategic guidance for the improvement and development of the bilateral ties,” Mao Ning told news agency PTI during a briefing while responding to a question on PM Modi’s remarks.

”Both sides have earnestly followed through on the important common understandings of our leaders, strengthened exchanges and practical cooperation at all levels, and achieved a series of positive outcomes,” he added.

The ministry said that in the two-thousand-year-plus history, the mainstream of China-India interactions has been friendly exchanges and mutual learning.

”China and India have a shared task to achieve respective development and revitalization, and should understand and support each other, and help each other succeed…The two countries should be partners that contribute to each other’ s success. A cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant is the only right choice for both sides,” Ning said.

”China stands ready to work with India to implement the important common understandings between the two leaders, take the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations as an opportunity and advance bilateral ties on the track of stable and sound development,” she added.

What PM Modi Said About China In The Podcast?

In his podcast, PM Modi said normalcy has returned to the India-China border after his recent talks with President Xi to defuse tensions ignited by the 2020 clashes between the two armies in eastern Ladakh.

”Look, the relationship between India and China isn’t something new. Both nations have ancient cultures and civilizations. Even in the modern world, they play a significant role. If you look at historical records, for centuries, India and China have learned from each other. Together, they have always contributed to the global good in some way,” PM Modi has said.

Sounding optimistic about the ties between the two countries, PM Modi said differences between neighbours are natural and emphasised the ancient cultural ties between them when the two civilizations learnt from each other and had little conflict.

”If we look back centuries, there’s no real history of conflict between us. It has always been about learning from each other and understanding one another,” he said.
