<p>Two decades back, a majority of the children born in Australia had surnames like Smith, Williams, Brown or Jones. However, in the past few years, the trend has changed across Australia.</p>
<p>While the change has been seen in almost all of the Australian states, but the data from Births, Deaths and Marriages show that the trend in changing surnames is the highest in Victoria.</p>
<p>The 2024 data from Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria shows that Singh is the most common surname in Victoria, according to The Epoch Times.</p>
<p>While Singh, meaning ‘lion’, is a common name among the Sikh community and the Hindus from Northern India, Kaur, another common name for women in the Sikh community, came at the third spot. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, the common Vietnamese name Nguyen stood at the second place, a spot it has maintained for over two decades. Other South Asian surnames, including Patel, Sharma, Ali, Gill, and Sandhu have also entered the list of top 20. </p>
<p>English surnames like the Smith and Williams came at the fourth and the fifth spot respectively in the list of the most common names in Victoria.</p>
<h3>What Does The Trend Suggest?</h3>
<p>The trend of most newborns with Indian surnames suggest a rising immigrant population in Victoria, especially those of Indian-origin. </p>
<p>Back in 2014, Smith was the frontrunner among the surnames in Victoria while Nguyen was the second most common recorded surname.</p>
<p>A decade ago, Singh was the third most common surname in the Australian state. Meanwhile, in 2004, South Asian surnames like Singh and Kaur didn’t feature in the top 20 common surnames. </p>
<p>In 2004, Smith was the most common surname in Victoria, followed by Nguyen, Brown, Jones, Wilson, Williams, Tran and Taylor.</p>
<h3>Singh Most Common Surname For Babies In New Zealand</h3>
<p>Singh has remained at the top of the most common family name given to newborns in New Zealand for the seventh year in a row.</p>
<p>The Department of Internal Affairs said that 680 babies born in New Zealand last year had the Indian surname in 2024, according to The New Zeland Herald.</p>
<p>While Singh topped the spot, Kaur remained at the second spot, with 630 babies registered, followed by Smith with 300 registrations. Like Australia, Smith remained the most common Surname in New Zealand a decade ago. </p>
