Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to prepare for the “voluntary” departure of Palestinians from Gaza, a move that follows US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to relocate Gazans.

”I have instructed the IDF (military) to prepare a plan to enable voluntary departure for Gaza residents,” Katz said on Thursday, adding that they could go “to any country willing to accept them”, news agency AFP Reported.

Trump had earlier suggested that Palestinians should be moved out of Gaza, triggering strong reactions from leaders in the Middle East and beyond. The United Nations has warned that any forced displacement of Palestinians would be “tantamount to ethnic cleansing”.

Trump Doubles Down on Gaza Proposal

Trump’s remarks, made during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, caused audible gasps. He insisted that “everybody loves” his plan, stating that the United States would take control of Gaza without deploying soldiers.

”The Gaza Strip would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting,” Trump reiterated on his Truth Social platform on Thursday. “No soldiers by the US would be needed! Stability for the region would reign!!!”

His administration later sought to clarify the proposal, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that any relocation of Gazans would be “temporary”. According to AFP, Rubio also challenged critics to provide an alternative solution, saying, “Those denouncing Trump’s plan should step forward and provide a solution and answer to that problem.”

Netanyahu Backs Trump’s ‘Original Idea’

Netanyahu has lauded Trump’s proposal, calling it “the first original idea to be raised in years” and urging people to “listen very well to this idea”. Speaking to Fox News, Netanyahu described the plan as “remarkable”, adding, “It should be really pursued… because I think it will create a different future for everyone.”

Katz also voiced support, saying Trump’s plan “could create broad opportunities for Gaza residents who wish to leave… and also facilitate the advancement of reconstruction programs for a demilitarised, threat-free Gaza”.

Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who recently vowed to “definitively bury” the idea of a Palestinian state, welcomed Katz’s move.

Hamas Reject Displacement Plan For Gazans

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem strongly condemned Trump’s remarks, calling them “absolutely unacceptable”.

”Trump’s remarks about Washington taking control of Gaza amount to an open declaration of intent to occupy the territory,” Qassem said, as quoted by AFP. “Gaza is for its people, and they will not leave.”

Many Palestinians in Gaza see any attempt to push them out as reminiscent of the “Nakba” or “catastrophe”—the mass displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s creation in 1948.

”They can do whatever they want, but we will remain steadfast in our homeland,” said 41-year-old Gazan Ahmed Halasa.

Some Israelis also expressed scepticism over Trump’s plan. “I really like what he said, but in my wildest dreams… it’s hard for me to believe it will happen, but who knows,” said 65-year-old Refael from Jerusalem, as quoted by AFP.

The United Nations has firmly opposed any forced relocation of Palestinians. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the “inalienable rights of the Palestinian people… to simply live as human beings in their own land”, AFP reported. His spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated, “Any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing.”

Egypt, which played a key role in mediating a ceasefire deal last month, has also rejected Trump’s idea. The Egyptian foreign ministry said on Thursday that Israeli support for the plan “weakens and destroys the negotiations on a ceasefire agreement and incites a return to fighting”.

The fragile ceasefire, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, was intended to halt the war that began on October 7, 2023, following Hamas’s attack on Israel. However, new rounds of talks are underway for a more permanent end to hostilities.
