India on Thursday condemned the destruction of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house after protestors vandalised and set fire to the Dhanmondi residence.

”It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5, 2025,” Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.

”All those who value the freedom struggle that nurtured Bangla identity and pride are aware of the importance of this residence for the national consciousness of Bangladesh,” the statement said.

The ministry further said that the act of vandalism should be strongly condemned.

The MEA’s response comes after violent protestors demolished the houses of leaders of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League and defaced murals of Mujibur Rahman after deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s live online address.

Thousands of people rallied on Wednesday in front of Hasina’s father Mujibur Rahman’s house in the capital’s Dhanmondi area, which had earlier been turned into a memorial museum.

The residence of Hasina, Sudha Sadan, located on Road 5 in Dhanmondi, was also set on fire by protesters late on Wednesday, according to The Daily Star newspaper.

The protesting students also removed the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of Dhaka University.

Meanwhile, the interim government in Bangladesh accused ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina of triggering the demolition at Dhanmondi-32, condemning the act as “unexpected and undesirable”.

In a statement, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing said, “The inflammatory statements made by fugitive Sheikh Hasina from India against the July uprising have created deep anger among the people, which has manifested in this incident.”

The statement further said the incident centred around two aspects first being Sheikh Hasina “insulting and dishonouring” martyrs of the July uprising, The Daily Star reported.
