Do you know about Onion Island? Also known as Awaji Island, the place in Japan is famous for its sweet-flavoured onions. The credit goes to the island’s sunny climate and fertile volcanic soil. That’s not all. Some tourist hotspots on the island have quirky onion-themed decor and activities. How cool is that? Recently, a social media user dropped a video on Instagram offering viewers a detailed glimpse of the Onion island.
“Just a quick trip from Kobe lies Awaji Island — Japan’s onion paradise,” she says in the video. One of the major highlights is the Utsunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum. A giant onion statue overlooking the sea will greet you at first. It is the perfect spot to click some stunning pictures. Oh well, you are welcome to buy feisty onion-shaped wigs here too.

Coming to the souvenir shop, you will be presented with a variety of onion-themed products. From onion snacks to band-aids, keychains to tote bags and tableware to clothing, you will be spoilt for choice. What’s more, there is an onion claw machine, along with a vehicle, a table and a piano — all decorated like onions. “It is quirky, it is fun and it is totally unique… Awaji Island is a must-see,” says the woman.
Reactions were quick to pour in.
“Top of Shrek’s bucket list,” read a comment, presumably referring to the film’s dialogue “Ogres are like onions – they have layers”
“No onion, no life,” wrote a user.
“I hope one day they made garlic island,” wished another.

Heaping praise on Japan’s innovation an individual pointed out, “It’s not an exaggeration to say that when Japan does a themed place they do it better than most countries.”
Here’s another sweet comment, “It’s crazy, funny and unique. It makes me wanna drive around in that little truck wearing an onion wig.”
