‘Your Mother Was Killed By Terrorists’: Owaisi Rebukes Bilawal Bhutto’s ‘Blood Will Flow’ Remark

by aweeincm

Amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched a sharp attack against Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, criticising his inflammatory rhetoric and reminding him of the brutal assassination of his mother by terrorists.

While speaking to news agency ANI in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Monday, Owaisi was asked about Bhutto’s recent remarks concerning India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. Bhutto, the former foreign minister, had declared at a rally, “Indus is ours and will remain ours; either our water will flow through it or our blood.”

Responding to the statement, Owaisi urged Bhutto to exercise restraint, saying, “Let’s not engage in childish commentary. Does he not remember what happened to his grandfather? Does he not remember what happened to his mother?” The Hyderabad MP was referring to former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in a suicide bombing in 2007.

“His mother was killed by terrorists; hence, he shouldn’t be making such statements. Does he have any idea about who he is talking to and what he is saying?” Owaisi added. He further remarked, “Unless the US gives you something, you cannot run your country, and you are trying to stare us down.”

Owaisi Raises Concerns On Indus Waters Treaty Move, Demands Pakistan To Be Put On FATF ‘Grey List'

According to a PTI report, Owaisi also addressed the broader issue of the Indus Waters Treaty being put in abeyance by the Union government in response to the Pahalgam attack. He raised concerns about the storage of water, stating, “Where will the water go after the Indus Waters Treaty was kept in abeyance? It has to be stored somewhere,” but added that his party fully supported the Centre’s decision.

Under the World Bank-brokered treaty, India was granted exclusive rights over the waters of the eastern rivers — the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi — with an average annual flow of about 33 million acre-feet (MAF). Meanwhile, the waters of the western rivers — the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab — averaging around 135 MAF, were largely allocated to Pakistan. With the treaty now suspended, India is exploring ways to utilise the waters of the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab.

Owaisi said Pakistan must be brought back onto the ‘grey list’ of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), emphasising, “Pakistan should be brought under the grey list of FATF to show they are financing terrorism through illegal money.” He also called for cyber attacks against Pakistan, asserting that “Article 51 of the UN law gives us the right to act in self-defence.”

He further criticised the Narendra Modi government’s deterrence policy, suggesting a re-evaluation was needed as attacks like the one in Pahalgam continued to occur despite airstrikes. Nevertheless, he reiterated that his party would back any decision made by the Centre.

“Pakistan should understand that India’s defence budget is bigger than their entire budget. They are 20 years behind India. The politicians there just keep blabbering. That country is facing internal issues. They can’t manufacture medicines for malaria but keep talking about fighting India,” Owaisi said, as quoted by PTI.

Responding disdainfully to a statement by former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi on the Pahalgam attack, Owaisi remarked, “He is a joker.”

Speaking on another issue, Owaisi opposed the provisions of the Waqf Amendment Act, asserting that it violated the Constitution. On the inclusion of non-Muslims in Waqf boards, he questioned, “Wouldn’t it be painful if we ask for non-Hindus to be included in Pandharpur temple trust?”
