by aweeincm

Amid the latest escalations in the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian negotiators have reached Istanbul, Turkiye, for the second round of peace talks. The negotiations will be held on Monday under a cloud of tense uncertainty as the war has now escalated with Ukraine’s largest-ever drone strike on Russian aviation infrastructure.

Kyiv claimed that the large-scale drone strike deep within Russian territory on Sunday destroyed more than 40 military aircraft. The fresh escalation could have an impact on the second round of peace talks. The first round of talks was held on May 16.

Vladimir Medinsky, who is heading the Russian negotiation team, was asked for his comments on the attacks on Russian air bases. He replied: “Wait for tomorrow,” according to Turkish media reports.

What Is Ukraine’s Plan At The Talks?

Ukrainian negotiators are preparing to unveil a detailed peace roadmap during pivotal talks with Russia set for June 2 in Istanbul. The proposal, obtained by news agency Reuters, outlines a step-by-step process aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the war, which is now entering its third year and widely seen as Europe’s most devastating conflict since World War II.

At the heart of the plan is a call for an immediate ceasefire lasting at least 30 days. This initial pause in fighting would pave the way for the exchange of prisoners on both sides, the return of Ukrainian children taken into Russian-controlled areas, and ultimately, a high-stakes meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The peace blueprint envisions broader negotiations involving the United States and European nations. Together, these powers would work with Kyiv and Moscow to iron out a comprehensive agreement that could finally bring an end to the protracted war.

According to Ukrainian officials, the proposal was sent to Russia ahead of the Istanbul meeting. While the framework echoes earlier positions laid out by Kyiv, it reaffirms several key demands: no limits on Ukraine’s post-war military capabilities, no formal recognition of Russian control over certain territories, and reparations from Moscow to help Ukraine rebuild.

One notable detail in the document is the suggested use of current front-line positions as the basis for territorial negotiations. This clause alone signals a potentially significant divergence from Russia’s previously stated conditions for peace, according to Reuters.

The talks come at a critical juncture, as international pressure to find a diplomatic solution continues to grow. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly urged both sides to come to the table, while Moscow has floated the idea of holding a second round of face-to-face discussions in Istanbul as early as next week.

Despite delays in receiving a formal response from Russia, Ukraine maintains it is ready to engage. Officials in Kyiv say they are committed to the pursuit of peace, though they are still awaiting a memorandum from the Kremlin outlining its counterproposals.

On Sunday, Ukraine President Zelenskyy had confirmed that a Ukrainian delegation would indeed travel to Istanbul to meet with their Russian counterparts.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy on Sunday detailed the drone attack on Russia and said: “Our people involved in preparing the operation were withdrawn from Russian territory in time.” He said Ukraine’s Head of the Security Service Vasyl Maliuk had submitted a report regarding the operation.

”An absolutely brilliant result. A result achieved solely by Ukraine. One year, six months, and nine days from the start of planning to effective execution. Our most long-range operation. I thanked General Maliuk for this success of Ukraine. I instructed the Security Service of Ukraine to inform the public about the details and results of the operation that can be disclosed. Of course, not everything can be revealed at this moment, but these are Ukrainian actions that will undoubtedly be in history books,” he said in an X post.

”Ukraine is defending itself, and rightly so – we are doing everything to make Russia feel the need to end this war. Russia started this war; Russia must end it. Glory to Ukraine,” he added.
