In a tragic incident, FC Conradie, the multi-millionaire owner of one of South Africa’s most exclusive safari lodges, was killed by an elephant at Gondwana Private Game Reserve near Mossel Bay.

Fatal Attack During Elephant Herding

According to The Daily Mail, the incident occurred at 8 am on July 22, when Conradie was attempting to guide a group of elephants away from the tourist lodges. The operation went wrong when a six-ton bull elephant turned on him, goring him with its tusks before trampling him multiple times.

Nearby rangers were unable to intervene in time to save him.

FC Conradie: A Passionate Conservationist

Conradie, who also owned the Caylix Group sports management company, was known for his deep passion for elephants and conservation. Staff recalled that he often ventured out to photograph the animals.

Holding honours degrees in zoology, animal studies, commerce, and marketing, he was described as an “ambitious entrepreneur and passionate about nature.”

Tributes and Silence at the Reserve

A senior source at Gondwana revealed, “Because he is the boss man, everybody has been warned to say absolutely nothing or they will be out the same day, it is a big clamp down. FC was a great guy to work for, and he loved his elephants… but you have to never forget they may live in a reserve but are wild. He will be greatly missed by all here.”

In an official statement, Gondwana Game Reserve paid tribute to Conradie, describing him as a “cherished leader, devoted husband, and father of three… a mentor, a visionary, and a truly remarkable individual.” The management requested privacy for his family and urged the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues.

History of Elephant Attacks at Gondwana

This is the second fatal elephant attack at Gondwana in just over a year. In March 2023, David Kandela, a 36-year-old staff member, was killed by elephants while guiding a herd through the Eco Tent Lodge area.

Luxury Lodge and Big Five Safari

Gondwana Private Game Reserve, a five-star lodge along South Africa’s famous Garden Route, is a sought-after destination for tourists and celebrities, with rates of around £900 per couple per night. It hosts the southernmost herd of elephants in Africa, alongside lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos.

Raising Questions on Safety Protocols

The incident has reignited debate about safety measures at luxury safari reserves. Experts emphasise that even seasoned professionals like Conradie must exercise extreme caution when interacting with elephants, which can display unpredictable behaviour despite appearing calm.
