‘Our Water Or Their Blood’: Bilawal Bhutto Fumes Over Indus Water Treaty Suspension

by aweeincm

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has issued a warning to India after New Delhi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians.

The PPP Chairman threatened “The Indus is ours”, adding “Either our water will flow through it, or their blood.”

He made the statement just days after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam reignited hostilities between the neighbouring countries.

Bhutto-Zardari accused India of scapegoating Pakistan to cover up its internal security lapses.

”In an attempt to cover its weaknesses and deceive the public, the Modi government is making false accusations against Pakistan and making one-sided decisions, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty,” he said in a post on X.

”However, standing here in Sukkur near the Indus River, I want to send a clear message to India that the Indus River belongs to us and will remain ours,” he added.

Abeyance Of Indus Waters Treaty

India has informed Pakistan of its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, with immediate effect, saying Pakistan has breached conditions of the treaty.

In a letter addressed by India’s Secretary of Water Resources Debashree Mukherjee wrote to his Pakistani counterpart, Syed Ali Murtaza: “Sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting Jammu and Kashmir impedes India’s rights under the Indus Waters Treaty.”

”The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” the letter read, reported PTI.

”The resulting security uncertainties have directly impeded India’s full utilisation of its rights under the treaty,” the letter read further.
