President Donald Trump faced a massive setback on Friday after his ‘big beautiful’ tax bill was blocked at the House Budget Committee with a handful of Republicans joining Democrats to vote against its passage over concerns that it was not enough to cut spending.

The group rejected the bill in a 21-16 vote, with five Republicans, including Representatives Chip Roy, Ralph Norman, Josh Brecheen, Lloyd Smucker and Andrew Clyde voting against it.

The bill is aimed at extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, his signature first-term legislative achivement. It includes funding mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, elimination of taxes on some tips and overtime income, and massive cuts to Medicaid and other government programs. The bill also includes boosting defence expenditure, and providing more funds for Trump’s border crackdown, news agency Reuters reported.

Hardline conservative lawmakers are demanding deeper cuts to programs like Medicaid and rollbacks on green energy tax breaks introduced during Biden’s presidency. They said that they won’t back what Trump’s bill unless these changes are made. Their main concern is that the tax cuts in the bill could add significantly to the country’s already massive $36 trillion debt, Associated Press reported.

Explaining his decision in a tweet, Rep Chip Roy said that Republicans are making progress, “but the vote was called, and the problems were not resolved, so I voted no”.

”Something needs to change or you’re not going to get my support,” said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas.

“Republicans MUST UNITE behind, “THE ONE, BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL!” Not only does it cut Taxes for ALL Americans, but it will kick millions of Illegal Aliens off of Medicaid to PROTECT it for those who are the ones in real need. The Country will suffer greatly without this Legislation, with their Taxes going up 65%,” Trump posted on X, ahead of Friday’s vote, imploring his party to fall in line.

“It will be blamed on the Democrats, but that doesn’t help our Voters. We don’t need “GRANDSTANDERS” in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE! It is time to fix the MESS that Biden and the Democrats gave us. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he added.

Despite Trump’s appeal to Republicans to unite, five of 21 Republicans voted to block the bill, saying they would continue to withhold support till further cuts were made to the Medicaid healthcare program for lower-income Americans and the green energy tax cuts implemented by Democrats were repealed.
