Indian-Origin Man In ‘Critical’ Condition After Cop ‘Kneels On Neck’ During Arrest In Australia

by aweeincm

An Indian origin man in Australia suffered critical brain injuries, which led to him in a coma, and is fighting for his life after the police tackled him to the ground and reportedly knelt on his neck while arresting.

The 42-year-old man, identified as Gaurav Kundi, a father of two, lost consciousness after the police act. His partner said that an officer allegedly put his knee into Gaurav’s neck, drawing the incident similar to the 2020 death of George Floyd in the US, according to a report by Australia Today.

Kundi and his partner, Amritpal Kaur, were reportedly involved in a heated argument in public in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide during the early hours of Thursday. A police patrol passing by is said to have interpreted the exchange as a case of domestic violence, even though Kaur maintained that Kundi was merely intoxicated and loud, not aggressive.

According to a statement given to 9News, authorities said Kundi “forcefully resisted” being taken into custody before collapsing and becoming unresponsive on the ground. Kaur recorded the incident on her phone, and the footage, later shared with 9News, reportedly showed Kundi yelling as multiple officers attempted to restrain him against a police vehicle.

’I’ve done nothing wrong,’ Kundi can be heard shouting in the video, while Kaur pleaded with officers to let him go and accused them of using excessive force.

Kundi is believed to have lost consciousness after being brought down to the ground. One officer reportedly drove a knee into his neck during the struggle, an action drawing comparisons to the widely condemned 2020 incident involving George Floyd in the US.

”I stopped filming because I panicked when the officer knelt on him,” Kaur told 9News. She also said that the head of Kundi was smashed against the police car and the road while arresting him.

The man of Indian origin was subsequently transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed he had sustained serious injuries to his brain and neck nerves. His devastated partner remains uncertain about whether he will regain consciousness from the coma.

Internal Inquiry Launch

In response to the incident, South Australia Police have reportedly initiated an internal inquiry and are currently reviewing footage captured by officers’ body cameras.

According to 9News, Acting Assistant Commissioner John DeCandia stated that, based on preliminary findings, the officers appeared to have followed protocol, though a full investigation is ongoing.

”I can say that from that evidence I’ve looked at, from that body-worn video, but it is only one portion, I’m comfortable, but that is only one police officer,” the Assistant Commissioner said.
