As India destroyed nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir in early morning missile strikes, several international news websites ran the news at the top.

The Washington Post, in an article titled “India strikes Pakistan after Kashmir attack, raising fears of war”, reported that strikes have put the nuclear-armed neighbours in direct conflict for the first time in six years.

Indian armed forces early Wednesday carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke.

The operation came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the armed forces full freedom to respond to the Pahalgam terror attack.

In a high-level meeting with the top defence brass, the prime minister on April 29 gave the armed forces “complete operational freedom” to decide on the mode, targets and timing of the response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

PM Modi also emphasised the national resolve to deal a “crushing blow to terrorism”.

The Guardian in its report, ‘India missile attack kills eight; Pakistan says five Indian fighter jets shot down’, reported the Pakistani government’s claim that five Indian aircraft had been shot down. However, India has not confirmed the reports yet.

News agency Reuters titled the news — ‘India strikes Pakistan over Kashmir tourist killings’. The Indian strikes in Pakistan follow the deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam about 15 days ago. As many as 26 people were killed by terrorists while they were enjoying their vacation in Baisaran Valley.

CNN titled the report “India launches airstrikes against Pakistan in major escalation”, while The New York Times said, “India Strikes Pakistan Two Weeks After Terrorist Attack”.

After launching the airstrikes, the Defence Ministry in a statement said these steps come in the wake of “the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered.”
