Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell chief Amit Malviya on Friday took a swipe at Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) president Bilawal Bhutto Zardari after the latter acknowledged Pakistan’s past ties with extremist elements, saying that the “fear is palpable”. Malviya’s reaction, posted on social media platform X, came amid heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir last week, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including 25 Indians.

“The fear is palpable,” Malviya wrote while sharing a screenshot of Bhutto’s remarks during an interview with Sky News journalist Yalda Hakim.

In the interview, Bhutto admitted to Pakistan’s troubled history with extremism, adding that the country had suffered as a result but had undertaken internal reforms to overcome the issue.

“As far as what the defence minister said, I don’t think it is a secret that Pakistan has a past… As a result, we have suffered, Pakistan has suffered. We have gone through wave after wave of extremism. But as a result of what we suffered, we also learned our lessons. We have gone through internal reforms to address this problem,” Bhutto told Sky News.

The PPP leader, who is also the son of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, maintained that although extremism was an unfortunate chapter in the country’s history, Pakistan had moved on from such affiliations.

‘If Someone Attacks Our Sindhu, Then They Should Be Ready For War’: Bilawal Bhutto

Meanwhile, addressing a rally in Mirpur Khas on Thursday, Bhutto declared that Pakistan desired peace but would not hesitate to respond if provoked by India. “Pakistan is a peaceful country, and Islam is a peaceful religion. We do not want war, but if someone attacks our Sindhu (Indus), then they should be ready for war. We don’t beat the drums of war, but if provoked, the roar of a united Pakistan will be deafening,” he said.

Bhutto’s remarks came just days after Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif made a similar acknowledgement during an interview with Sky News. In a video clip that went viral on social media, Asif admitted that Pakistan had supported and funded terror groups, echoing longstanding allegations made by India.

“We have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about three decades, and the West, including Britain. That was a mistake, and we suffered for that, and that is why you are saying this to me. If we had not joined the war against the Soviet Union and later on the war after 9/11, Pakistan’s track record was unimpeachable,” Asif said.

These candid admissions from Pakistan’s top leadership come in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which the proscribed group Lashkar-e-Taiba — known for its ties to Pakistan — was reportedly involved.
