<h3><strong>What’s the claim?</strong></h3>
<p>Viral posts across social media platforms have quoted renowned investor Warren Buffett as saying that U.S. President Donald Trump is making the “best financial decisions for America in 50 years,” referring to the recent spate of sweeping tariffs introduced by the Trump administration. </p>
<p>One of the X posts, which also included a one-minute video of a person speaking to the camera repeating this quote, was reshared by President Trump on Truth Social (archived <a href=”https://archive.ph/2HrzX”>here</a>). </p>

<p>On April 2, 2025, Trump<a href=”https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/a-timeline-of-trumps-tariff-actions-so-far”> announced </a>”reciprocal” tariffs at a baseline rate of 10 percent for every country and higher rates for individual countries with a trade surplus with the U.S. <a href=”https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn93e12rypgo”>Tariffs</a> are taxes charged on goods imported from other countries. </p>
<p>Trump’s sweeping tariffs <a href=”https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/international-business/global-stock-markets-tumble-amid-tariff-war-japan-china-and-india-hit-hard-10-things-to-know/articleshow/120051763.cms”>have led to </a>slumps in <a href=”https://www.theguardian.com/business/blog/live/2025/apr/07/global-stock-markets-brace-donald-trump-us-tariffs-business-live-updates-news”>stock markets</a> <a href=”https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2025/4/7/trump-digs-in-on-tariffs-as-global-stock-markets-go-into-freefall” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>worldwide</a>. JP Morgan has also <a href=”https://www.reuters.com/markets/jpmorgan-lifts-global-recession-odds-60-us-tariffs-stoke-fears-2025-04-04/”>predicted a 60 percent chance</a> of global recession. </p>
<p>We did not find any credible reports or evidence of Buffett making such a statement. We also found that Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate of which Buffett is the CEO, has also released a statement dismissing the viral claim as false. </p>
<p>Buffett has not spoken extensively about these tariffs, but his recent comments have been negative. </p>
<h3><strong>What did we find?</strong></h3>
<p>A keyword search across search engines did not turn up any credible reports of Buffett making such a statement. </p>
<p>Further, we checked the Berkshire Hathaway website for any press releases or statements by Buffett or the company on the tariffs. </p>
<p>We found a <a href=”https://www.berkshirehathaway.com/news/apr0425.pdf”>press release</a> published by the company on April 4, 2025, dismissing the claims as false. The press release stated that all such reports circulating on social media about alleged comments by Buffett are false. We also<a href=”https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/global-trends/did-warren-buffett-really-call-trumps-tariff-move-the-best-economic-move-in-50-years-berkshire-issues-statement/articleshow/120003589.cms?from=mdr”> found</a> <a href=”https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/berkshire-dismisses-false-reports-buffett-comments-after-trump-shares-video-2025-04-04/”>several</a> <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/stock-market-tariffs-trade-war-04-04-2025/card/berkshire-hathaway-denies-that-buffett-said-he-supports-trump-economic-policies-6zUwibwh2DX4pnPGRJsv?mod=WSJ_home_supertoppermiddle_lctimeline”>news reports</a> carrying this statement, denying the viral social media claim. </p>

<p>We also found a <a href=”https://www.cnbc.com/video/2025/04/04/berkshire-hathaway-responds-to-false-reports-on-social-media.html”>video report</a> on the subject uploaded by CNBC on their website. At the one minute 10 second mark, business journalist Rebecca Quick says that she has spoken to Buffett, adding, “He says that he’s not talking to anybody about anything related to the markets, the economy or tariffs and that he will not be doing that between now and the annual meeting.” The annual meeting referred to here is Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting, which is scheduled to be held on May 3, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska. </p>
<p>Buffett has not spoken extensively on his opinion about the recent sweeping tariffs introduced by the Trump administration. In an interview uploaded by <a href=”https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=665161722629280″>CBS News</a> (archived <a id=”isPasted” href=”https://archive.ph/PnJJ8″>here</a>) in March 2025, he spoke more generally about tariffs. </p>
<h3><strong>The verdict</strong></h3>
<p>Both Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett have dismissed the claim as false. There is also no credible evidence online to support this claim. </p>
