The convoy of Pakistani Member of Parliament Aseefa Bhutto, daughter of President Asif Ali Zardari, was attacked by a mob on Friday. According to Geo News, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged, and the police arrested several individuals for stopping Assefa’s convoy at the Jamshoro toll plaza.

According to the report quoting Jamshoro SSP, Bhutto was heading to Nawabshah in a convoy when they were stopped near the Jamshoro toll plaza yesterday.

A demonstration was staged by several people against the controversial canal projects that had been postponed indefinitely by the federal government last month, the police officer said. The protestors also struck the vehicles in the convoy with the batons, reports Geo TV, and added that the police personnel safely cleared Aseefa Bhutto’s vehicle within a minute.

Last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that no new canals will be constructed unless a consensus is reached in the Council Of Common Interests (CCI)

Earlier, two were shot dead as protests intensified in the Sindh province in Pakistan against the controversial army-backed canal project on the Indus River System. According to India Today report, the protestors blaming the domination of Punjab for the water issue attacked the house of a minister from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Sindh and Punjab are among the four provinces of Pakistan. According to the report, the inhabitants of Sindh have held Punjab responsible for putting it lower on the priority list.

The Sindh-based PPP is part of the ruling coalition of Shahbaz Sharif and holds power in Sindh. According to India Today, the Chairperson of JSMM, Shafi Burst, accused the military establishment of Pakistan of using an “immature, power-hungry, and unserious” Bilawal to advance its own geopolitical objectives and suppress the canal protests.
