China Resumes Boeing Aircraft Deliveries Amid Temporary Tariff Truce With US

by aweeincm

China has given the green light for domestic airlines to resume accepting Boeing aircraft deliveries, lifting a ban that was in place for several weeks. The announcement coincides with a significant breakthrough in trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing, signalling a temporary easing in economic tensions.

Bloomberg reported that Chinese aviation authorities have officially notified local carriers that they are now permitted to proceed with receiving US-manufactured aircraft. However, each airline will have the autonomy to determine the timing and manner of those deliveries. While this move offers a potential uplift for the US aerospace giant, there is uncertainty about how quickly Chinese airlines will take action, especially given the lingering unpredictability surrounding the broader trade conflict.

The policy shift comes immediately after the United States and China reached an agreement to halt additional tariffs for a 90-day period. As part of this truce, both countries have also agreed to substantial reductions in existing tariffs, easing them by a total of 115 percentage points.

Trade Tensions Eased, But Fragile

Earlier, China raised tariffs on American imports to 125 per cent, prompting a strong retaliatory response from the United States, which imposed tariffs of 145 per cent on Chinese products.

Although the recent easing of restrictions marks a significant development, analysts caution that the benefits for Boeing and other US exporters could be short-lived if negotiations do not result in a more permanent resolution.

“Boeing was caught in the crossfire of the trade war,” the report stated, after Chinese authorities told local airlines to stop accepting deliveries. In some cases, jets that had already arrived were sent back to the United States. In response, Boeing began looking for alternative buyers. One potential customer was India’s Air India, which was reported to be in discussions to acquire 10 of the planes rejected by Chinese carriers.

Tariff Reductions Follow Global Trade Retaliations

The standoff escalated further on April 2 when US President Donald Trump declared reciprocal tariffs targeting more than 100 countries, including key Asian economies such as China, India, and Japan. China, in particular, was hit with a 34 per cent ‘discounted’ tariff on top of a previously enforced 20 per cent. Beijing retaliated by significantly raising duties on American goods.

A turning point arrived on Monday after high-level talks between US and Chinese officials took place in Geneva. The outcome was a temporary 90-day ceasefire on further tariff actions, during which both sides pledged to lower trade barriers. The US agreed to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods to 30 per cent from the earlier 145 per cent. China, in turn, dropped its tariffs on American products to 10 per cent from the earlier 125 per cent.

Although the current pause provides temporary relief, the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether this opening can evolve into a more lasting solution—or if the situation will once again spiral into economic confrontation.
