A chilling video of the moments before a couple in Pakistan’s Balochistan province were shot dead for “honour killing” has emerged on social media. The couple was allegedly killed for marrying against the wishes of their family.

In the one-minute video, which has gone viral on social media, a group of people can be seen arriving in an SUV and pickup trucks at a deserted terrain on the outskirts of Quetaa, the provincial capital.

The couple is taken out of the vehicles, and the woman, alone among a dozen males, could be seen with her head covered with a shawl. She was given a copy of the Quran, which she took in her hand and started walking towards the deserted hill.

”Walk seven steps with me, after that you can shoot me,” the woman says to a man, speaking in the regional Brahavi dialect.

The man follows her for some distance, after which she says, “You are allowed only to shoot me. Nothing more than that.”

However, it’s not clear what the woman meant by “nothing more than that”, but the man who followed her raised the pistol towards her and fired multiple rounds. The woman, who stood with her face on the other side, was shot at on her back from close range and fell on the ground after the third shot, presumably dead.

More gunshots then echo the rocky terrain, and the video shows a bloodied man lying near the woman’s body while the crowd cheered.

The incident reportedly took place three days before Eid al-Adha in May.

The video, after it became viral, triggered outrage in the country and beyond, with activists calling for swift justice in the case. They also demanded laws against crimes which target women who dare to stand up to local traditions and customs.

A probe has been initiated by the local police into the case and identified the couple as Bano Bibi and Ahsan Ullah, reported NDTV.

As many as 13 suspects have been arrested so far in the “dishonour killing” case. According to the police, the couple’s killing was ordered by tribal elder, Sardar Satakzai.

The tribal leader had passed the diktat after the woman’s brother approached him, complaining about her marriage, which had happened without his consent.

The tribal leader and the woman’s brother were among the 13 people arrested by the police, said police chief Naveed Akhtar.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, at least 405 “dishonour” killings took place in Pakistan in 2024, while the activists estimate the real numbers to be much higher, since such cases are not often reported.
