Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump discussed the recent armed conflict between India and Pakistan in a phone call, according to Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov.

Speaking at a briefing in Moscow, Ushakov revealed, “They also touched upon the Middle East and the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which was stopped with the personal participation of President Trump.” The conversation comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in South Asia and the Middle East.

Pahalgam Terror Attack

The conflict between India and Pakistan intensified following a deadly terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, a tourist town in Kashmir. The attack claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese tourist.

The incident triggered strong retaliatory action by the Indian Armed Forces, which launched <a title=”Operation Sindoor” href=”https://news.abplive.com/topic/operation-sindoor” data-type=”interlinkingkeywords”>Operation Sindoor on May 7. The operation targeted locations inside Pakistan and the Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir that India alleges are used as bases by terror groups.

In response, Pakistan carried out retaliatory strikes, further escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. However, the crisis appeared to ease on May 10, when both countries announced a complete ceasefire.

Although details of Trump’s specific role remain undisclosed, Ushakov’s remarks suggest that the former US president played a behind-the-scenes diplomatic role in helping bring the two sides to the negotiating table.

The call between Putin and Trump also covered developments in the Middle East, though no further details were provided.

The recent interaction underlines continued diplomatic channels and informal interventions that influence conflict resolution even beyond official government roles, as Trump no longer holds office. It also reflects Russia’s interest in maintaining dialogue with influential political figures in the West.
