Lee Jae-Myung And Kim Moon Soo Face Off In High-Stakes South Korea Election

by aweeincm

Voters in South Korea are casting their ballots in a pivotal presidential election set against a backdrop of political unrest, economic uncertainty, and growing geopolitical challenges. The winner of today’s snap election will assume office immediately, an unusual move that eliminates the traditional two-month transition period, stepping into a five-year term during a time of heightened internal division and external pressures, including rising tensions with North Korea and concerns over US trade policy.

Liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung, representing the Democratic Party, has consistently led in recent polls ahead of conservative contender Kim Moon Soo. The election was called just weeks after President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office, following widespread backlash over his controversial martial law declaration in December.

Lee, 60, played a central role in the effort to remove Yoon from power. Reflecting on the night Yoon made the declaration, Lee said he initially believed it was a fake video until his wife confirmed its authenticity. Acting swiftly, Lee mobilized Democratic lawmakers to the National Assembly and urged the public to gather in protest. His real-time livestream of the events gained traction as he called for immediate action.

“The rebellion was subdued, and Yoon Suk Yeol was dismissed. The long, severe winter has passed, and spring has come again. The people have finally made it,” Lee wrote in a book published in April.

This marks Lee’s third bid for the presidency. After narrowly losing to Yoon in 2022, he has positioned himself as a reformer capable of healing domestic divides and reviving the economy. A former factory worker turned human rights lawyer, Lee’s rise from poverty has resonated with many, though critics argue his populist style fosters division.

His candidacy is also clouded by ongoing legal troubles—he faces five criminal trials, though a presidential win would grant him immunity from prosecution while in office.

Kim Moon Soo

On the conservative side, Kim Moon Soo, 73, has emerged as an unexpected standard-bearer. Once labor minister under Yoon, Kim defied calls for a Cabinet apology over Yoon’s actions and was later chosen as the People Power Party’s nominee in a surprise internal vote.

In a show of party unity after internal disputes, Kim said, “From today, we are one team. Let’s fight together and win together.”

A former labor activist who spent over two years in prison for opposing military rule, Kim dramatically shifted his political stance in the 1990s, joining the conservative ranks. Despite past electoral defeats, he has emphasized national security and economic deregulation in his campaign, pledging to strengthen missile defenses and reduce business-related taxes.

Kim also drew attention during the campaign for revising his stance on South Korea’s authoritarian past. “When I was young, I opposed President Park Chung-hee. But now, I’ve realized I did something wrong,” he said. “I spat at his grave but now I offer flowers before it.”

As the nation awaits the outcome, all eyes are on whether South Korea’s next leader will pursue reconciliation or deepen the divide left in the wake of Yoon’s ouster.
