Donald Trump Changes Tune On India-Pakistan Mediation: ‘Don’t Want To Say I Did, But…’

<p data-pm-slice=”1 1 []”>Days after claiming that he brokered a peace between India and Pakistan, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has now taken a U-turn on the issue. The US President said that he doesn&rsquo;t want to claim full credit but believes that he played a role in halting the hostilities.</p>
<p>”I don’t want to say I did, but I sure as hell helped settle the problem between Pakistan and India last week, which was getting more and more hostile, and all of a sudden, you&rsquo;ll start seeing missiles of a different type, and we got it settled,&rdquo; Trump said.</p>
<p>The US President also said he asked both India and Pakistan to do trade instead of war. He further added that Pakistan and India was very happy with the talk of trade and that they are on their way.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I hope I don&rsquo;t walk out of here and two days later find out that it&rsquo;s not settled, but I think it is settled, and we talked to them about trade. Let&rsquo;s do trade instead of [war]. And Pakistan was very happy with that, and India was very happy with that, and I think they&rsquo;re on the way,&rdquo; the US President further added.</p>

How long have you been fighting for about 1000 years? Oh, that’s a lot. I’m not sure about that. I’m not sure about settling. That’s a tough one. They’ve been fighting for a long time… It was really going to be escalating out of control,” Trump added.</p>
<p data-pm-slice=”1 1 []”>The remarks via Trump come amid repeated clarifications from India that there was no third-party mediation. According to the Indian officials, ceasefire talks followed a direct request from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to his Indian counterpart.</p>
<p data-pm-slice=”1 1 []”>Earlier, Trump claimed that he brokered a truce between India and Pakistan following the military conflict after &lsquo;Operation Sindoor&rsquo;. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, &ldquo;After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!&rdquo;</p>

<p data-pm-slice=”1 1 []”>On May 7, India launched <a title=”Operation Sindoor” href=”https://news.abplive.com/topic/operation-sindoor” data-type=”interlinkingkeywords”>Operation Sindoor</a> following the killing of 26 civilians in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.</p>
<p>Following India&rsquo;s attack on terrorist sites, Pakistan launched large-scale drone and missile attacks on May 8 and 9. The action of Pakistan was met with a proper reply by the Indian Armed Forces, destroying the air bases and military installations in Pakistan.</p>
