The announcement followed intense diplomatic activity after India carried out precision strikes on nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under ‘<a title=”Operation Sindoor” href=”https://news.abplive.com/topic/operation-sindoor” data-type=”interlinkingkeywords”>Operation Sindoor’ on Wednesday, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam massacre in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.

The White House on Friday said that President Trump wants the conflict to de-escalate “as quickly as possible”. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked, “The President has expressed he wants to see this de-escalate as quickly as possible. He understands these are two countries that have been at odds with one another for decades, long before President Trump was here in the Oval Office.”

Leavitt added that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Rubio have both been “very much involved” in the ongoing mediation efforts. “Trump has good relationships with the leaders of both countries,” she noted, adding that Rubio has been in “constant communication with the leaders of both countries, trying to bring this conflict to an end.”

On Thursday, Secretary Rubio held separate conversations with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the calls, Rubio emphasised the need for de-escalation and urged Pakistan to take concrete measures to end any support for terrorist groups. Jaishankar, in his response, conveyed that India would firmly counter any Pakistani attempts to escalate the situation.
