As diplomatic tensions continue to simmer between India and Pakistan following the deadly terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Iran has stepped forward and offered to mediate in the matter between the two countries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday cited centuries-old civilisational ties and described both India and Pakistan as “brotherly neighbours” as he offered help to defuse tensions in the region, invoking a Persian poem from the 13th century.

”India and Pakistan are brotherly neighbours of Iran, enjoying relations rooted in centuries-old cultural and civilizational ties. Like other neighbours, we consider them our foremost priority,” he said.

”Tehran stands ready to use its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to forge greater understanding at this difficult time,” Araghchi added, citing a quotation from ‘Bani Adam’, a famous 13th-century Persian poem written by legendary Iranian poet Saadi Shirazi.

”Human Beings are members of a whole, In creation of one essence and soul, If one member is inflicted with pain, Other members uneasy will remain,” the poem reads.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has also offered to help in de-escalating the situation. Saudi Foreign Ministry said that Prince Faisal bin Farhan held separate phone calls with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar regarding the issue.

”Had a telecon with Foreign Minister @FaisalbinFarhan of Saudi Arabia. Discussed the Pahalgam terrorist attack and its cross-border linkages,” Jaishankar said in a statement after speaking with Faisal bin Farhan.

PM Narendra Modi was in Saudi Arabia when the Pahalgam terror attack took place on Tuesday, April 22. He had to cut short his trip and return to India following the terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

India has directly blamed Pakistan for orchestrating the attack through cross-border support for terrorist groups and announced a series of diplomatic and economic measures against it in retaliation.

However, Pakistan has denied involvement and said it would respond to every attack India mounts.
