Former South Korean President Moon Jae-In Indicted On Corruption Case

by aweeincm

Former President Moon Jae-in has been indicted on corruption charges connected to the alleged improper employment of his son-in-law at an airline, prosecutors in South Korea announced on Thursday.

According to AFP, Moon was “indicted for corruption for receiving 217 million won in connection with facilitating the employment of his son-in-law at an airline”, the Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office said in a statement.

The case against former President Moon Jae-in adds another layer to South Korea’s intensifying political drama. With elections approaching on June 3 after Yoon Suk Yeol’s was terminated following his brief imposition of martial law.

Moon Jae-in, who served as South Korea’s president from 2017 to 2022, was known for his efforts to improve relations with North Korea. He played a key role in organising landmark meetings between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and then-US President Donald Trump, aiming to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy, as per the report.

According to the prosecutors, Moon’s son-in-law was appointed managing director by low-cost airline Thai Eastar Jet, “despite lacking any relevant experience or qualifications in the airline industry”. Prosecutors stated that the airline, which was effectively under the influence of a former Member of Parliament from Moon’s party, hired Moon’s son-in-law in an attempt to gain favour with the then-president.

The prosecutors also said that any salary and other financial benefits paid by the airline to the son-in-law between 2018 and 2020 were confirmed to be “not legitimate salary payments, but bribes intended for the president”

Moon’s son-in-law later divorced his daughter. With Moon now indicted, two former South Korean presidents are simultaneously facing legal action.

Disgraced former president Yoon is currently on trial for insurrection over his December 3 martial law decree, which was overturned within about six hours after opposition lawmakers voted it down.

If convicted, Yoon could be sentenced to life in prison or be given the maximum penalty, which would be the death sentence. But it is highly unlikely that any death sentence would be carried out.
