US Issues Stricter Travel Advisory For Bangladesh, Flags ‘Violence And Terrorism’

<p data-pm-slice=”0 0 []”>A strict travel advisory was issued by the United States, flagging concerns of terrorism and civil unrest in Bangladesh, which saw a deadly coup and change in regime last year. The advisory issued by the State Department has advised US citizens to reconsider traveling to Bangladesh due to civil unrest, crime, and terrorism.</p>
<p>Currently, Bangladesh has a ‘level 3’ tag urging US citizens to reconsider their travel, while some regions, such as the Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban Hill Tracts districts, come with a level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Since summer 2024, civil unrest and violent clashes have largely subsided with the formation of the Interim Government. Occasional protests continue with potential for violent clashes,” the advisory read.</p>
<p>&ldquo;US citizens are reminded to avoid all gatherings, even peaceful ones, since they could turn violent with little or no warning,” it added.</p>
<p>”Kidnappings have occurred in the region, including those motivated by domestic or familial disputes, and those targeting members of religious minorities. Separatist organisations and political violence also pose additional threats to visitors to the region, and there have been instances of IED explosions and active shooting,” the US advisory further read.</p>

<p>The Chittagong Hill Tracts include three districts: Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban.</p>
<p>According to the advisory issued by the United States, citizens travelling have been asked to avoid demonstrations and political gatherings. The advisory mentioned that the demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and quickly escalate into violence.</p>
<p>The citizens have also been asked to follow local media for the breaking events and be prepared to adjust plans. Among other advice included is not to physically resist any robbery attempt and to get to a safe area and report any criminal incident to the local authorities.</p>
<p>The US has also asked the citizens to review the country security report, visit the website for travel to high-risk areas, and prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations, among others.</p>
